What is the best option for a long term car rental, probably a 4x4 truck or a sports utility vehicle not too expensive to rent and where would be a good place to use as a home base?

I would love to have some serious advice about retirement in Bogota or Cartagena Colombia. I'm ready to start my retirement planning because I feel that working too much and never taking a break is not smart for an old man like me. I am coming down for a month or two to check out the Pacific coastal area for a nice spot to retire in Colombia South America. Thanks in advance for your comments and help.

I you travel to the mountains or you must drive through rough roads, then renting a 4 x 4 has sense, but if you are driving on smooth city roads, then an automobile front wheel drive will be enough.

Somebody here in the expats forum knows a definitive answer as to whether or not our shipment must be fumigated prior to arrival in Mexico. My friends and me heard one very reputable horror story in which somebody's entire shipment was destroyed by the Mexican customs for not being fumigated and considered unsafe. After asking the locals Mexican shippers our main shippers are working with have told us fumigation of our household goods is unnecessary. Anyone that can confirm the actual regulation, or link me to a resource that explains it? Thank in advance for your help. I also heard that if that the pallet is used, they have to be specially treated for shipment. Anyways, what could the best way to get your sttuf in Guadalajara, or DF cities? Anybody in this forum have being living to Mexico, and so how is the process to import cargo and personal belongings?

I would love to retire in one of the top places to live in Mexico or Columbia! what I wonder is if you can you drive with a US license in Mexico? Because I want to feel free while visiting destinations for tourism and locals, get to know many fun destinations and live my crasy life in there. My best advice is to go for short vacations overthere and get a feel by yourself. Maybe renting a car and driving across tows and the fields where locals are living.
