I need your attention: Before we all jump to paranormal you might wanna rule out there isn't any black mold growing around inside your floor boards or walls ! Once you get that part figured out then I'd come back and let everyone know. Evidence would be nice as well. Like a report stating no mold was found on the premises. That's the only way you can get a straight answer and even then no one can answer you the why or who if all other options ruled out.

A few years ago I could smell, then cannabis, spaghetti Bolognaise (bologna) all in one day, and it is very hard to make the difference if it is mildew or just a food dish being cooked.

Move your bed, you probably have a water leak and check for water leakage under the house.
Your situation sounds similar to something I experienced about a year ago, however it was a burnt wood smell.

In the past I had some water shoes that when they dried they smelled like that!
I get other smells as well. Sometimes they are familiar, sometimes totally confusing and it is hard to tell what it is exactly.

Don't forget to check carpeting for dampness in closets and around walls that are near where water heater, the pipes would be behind the walls. The heaters start to drip before they fully break and start flooding rooms. When it leaks, it comes from inside the walls and creates mold.

I woke up one night with scratches on my back. A few weeks later after going to bed, I smelt what smelled like rotted meat. Then had scratches again then it all just went away.
