Book Of Likes Faces

When I was 15 years old I had something strange/scary happen to me. I was walking home from school and I would always go the same way because it was the fastest. I would zigzag down a series of small streets through a neighborhood. When I was almost home a had a choice of going two different ways. Up to this point it had been a normal walk. Suddenly I heard someone say my name. I turned around thinking it was one of my friends. There was no one there. There was no cars anyone could of hid behind or anything. I turned around and kept walking. As I was nearing the corner where I could go two different ways I again heard someone say my name. This time when I looked around I saw a young girl standing in a doorway. I just figured maybe she had the same name and her mom was calling her. I decided to go to the right because it was a few minutes faster. As I started walking I heard someone scream my name "JOHN" really loud. At that point I decided to turn and go the other way. A few minutes later I heard all kinds of police sirens and a car crash.
It turns out at the same time I would have reached the next corner to turn a guy running from the cops lost control and jumped right where I would have been standing. They estimate he was going between 60 and 70 mph when he hit the fire hydrant on that corner.
Needless to say I was very upset. After I settled down I realized the voice I heard saying my name was one of my friends voices. Unfortunately that should have been impossible. My friend had lost her battle with cancer the previous month. I know what I heard. We had been friends all through elementary and middle school, I believe that either she or something using her voice saved my life that day.

As a mother I am not sure how my parents and family went thru this. Luckily I was young enough to not remember any of it. I am also lucky to have minimal scaring. I have a bald spot where I will always have to part my hair, a scar on my back and on the sides of my legs from skin grafts, but it could have been so much worse. Thankful for all the amazing doctors i had during this time and literally when I say I have tough skin, i mean in more ways than one. This is proof that as humans we are resilient creatures, we can overcome whatever comes at us, it’s all about how you decide to handle it and even in the shittiest of moments, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
